The idea was conceived as to enhance the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine & Health Science in early 2004. It was a high caliber effort by the faculty to ensure that the centre development would become a reality as its ‘niche’ area for future embodiment in research and to provide a cutting-edge imaging service to the nation. In 2005, the faculty through its delegate had paid a historic scientific visit to several renowned nuclear imaging centres in Europe and United Kingdom of which a strong foundation networking in various academic and research activities has been sealed off. In 2006, a paper work for the centre development was proposed to the Malaysian government and in 2008 with continual active commitment in research through international collaboration and scientific paper presentation, the faculty was given a trust to run the project under 9th Malaysian Plan (RMK-9). The project development was completed in 2009 and it was then called ‘The Centre for Nuclear Imaging’. The centre is equipped with a state of the art PET/CT (64-Siemens Biograph) and hot laboratory and has fully operational in March 2010.
